The beginning of a dream in Ribera del Duero: Bodegas Marta Maté

The story of Bodegas Marta Maté began in 2003, when three friends and co-workers in the field of agri-food engineering decided to venture into creating a vineyard in one of the most challenging areas of the Ribera del Duero region. Why such a difficult area? The answer is simple, they wanted to explore uncharted territory and discover if they could create unique wines from it.

Succeeding in a challenging area of Ribera del Duero

Despite the first obstacles they faced, such as the lack of family history in viticulture and the difficulty of introducing changes in an unfavorable socioeconomic environment, the three friends did not let themselves be defeated. They planted a 26 hectare vineyard in a high mountain area in the province of Burgos at 920 meters high . Over time, they discovered that their idea was viable and that they could produce high-quality wines.

Expansion and success with the incorporation of a winemaker

In 2008, the team expanded with the addition of a fourth partner, winemaker César Maté. He carried out a micro-processing of 3,000 kg of grapes that gave life to his first wine, Primordium , a word that means " origin ." This wine was the first of many others that would be launched on the market over time.

Consolidation and change towards biodynamic viticulture in Ribera del Duero

In 2013, the project was consolidated with the acquisition of a small winery in Tubilla del Lago , a little-known place in Ribera del Duero , but with a great history. There, the team worked on the recovery of centuries-old vines , changing from conventional to organic viticulture, which allowed them to preserve more than 40 "hawthorns" and create five new red wines and one rosé wine.
